Where will I be seen?
The Adult Speech & Language Therapy Service is based in Milton Keynes General Hospital, adjacent to the Luing Cowley Outpatients building. We see people in our suite of rooms there, or we might see you in any of the following settings:
If you are receiving other therapies this may affect where you see the speech and language therapist. If you have an appointment letter, it will tell you where your appointment is.
How do I get referred?
If you have a problem with understanding or speaking, or if you stammer, you can refer yourself directly by telephone, post or email.
If your problem is to do with swallowing, eating or drinking, you will need to ask your doctor to refer you.
We are only able to treat people with voice problems after they have been seen by one of the hospital’s ENT team of doctors. Your GP can make this referral.
Alternatively, you can speak to your GP or another health professional who will be able to refer you or give you advice. If you are not sure, please ring us and we will guide you through the process.
If you have recently seen a speech and language therapist in Milton Keynes Hospital and you need ongoing support this will be arranged automatically.
How long will I have to wait?
We aim to see everyone as soon as possible, and we especially endeavour to see you within eight weeks of receiving your referral. We do respond to urgent cases appropriately. If you have any questions about your wait, please contact us.
What will happen at my first appointment?
Your SLT will have allowed up to 1 hour for your appointment and will discuss with you the reason for your appointment. Together, we will form a plan as to how we may be able to help you. Subsequent sessions may be shorter. There will be plenty of time for any questions you might have.
Can I have a companion with me?
If you would like to have ..... You will benefit most if you are able to concentrate fully. It’s a good idea to make alternative arrangements if you usually have small children with you.
